Community Land Trusts Explained

How does the Springfield Community Land Trust work?

New Construction

All new builds are Energy Star construction. To ensure equal access for all ages and abilities, universal design principles are incorporated. Our newest projects also include fire suppression systems.

Renovations

The SCLT works in Center City Springfield where the oldest housing (hit hardest by the 2008 recession) is located. Each home in the SCLT program goes through a major rehab to ensure everything is up to code prior to being sold to a family, which may include:

  • Additional insulation
  • New windows
  • Siding
  • Updated electrical and plumbing
  • Evaluate roof and HVAC systems to avoid additional burden to new homeowners

“I feel incredibly lucky to have a Land Trust house. I was saving for a downpayment while living in a 30-year-old trailer. My elderly mom became sick, so I moved across the state to help her, which ate up my savings. I was trying to figure out how to get into a better place when I saw a sign for a SCLT home. I went online to find out more and started my application.

LeeAnn made the nerve-wracking process of buying a house less stressful. She explained everything and patiently answered all my questions. I now have a comfortable home I can afford thanks to the Springfield Community Land Trust. I cannot say enough good things about the organization.”

“You gave us the opportunity to have a real home — not just a place we call home. We now have a home for family events, like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthday parties! The opportunity is wonderful. The process was easy. If you commit and do the work, this will improve your life.”
